In the course of implementing the long - term programme of Municipality City of Dobrich , section Environmental Protection , aiming at utilizing wastes products , particularly organic wastes , we developed and implemented the Composting Project .

A new children s playground was constructed under the suggestion and with the participation of the inhabitants in the neighborhood Abritus . For the better maintenance and protection of the site , an Agreement for Public Private Partnership between the Mayor of the Municipality and the children from the neighborhood was signed after completing the construction activities .

For more than 10 years the Environment Department has covered citizens education in the area of ecology in its yearly Program of preserving the environment that are developed and realized in partnership with environment non-government organizations and student ecology clubs. Main part of the program is working with local media aiming to increase the level of information spread in society. An active part in the dialog between municipality and citizens plays the newly formed Municipal Environment Center.

The Green Heart of Simeonovgrad project aims to transform the unregulated landfill created in the centre of the city into a park. Municipal authorities, the Regional Association of Municipalities Maritsa and the citizens discussed the priorities of the city and decided that action should be taken to improve the city centre.

Over the last 10 years a successful partnership has developed between the hospital in Dobrich and the hospital in the Swiss town of Schafhausen. In 2001 2002 a project was implemented for improving the quality of the water supply system and drinking water at the hospital. A public- private partnership was established supported by the Ministry of Health and Georg Fischer Foundation.

The project Center for Protection of Nature and Animals was implemented within the concept developed by Swiss experts, according to which it was previewed to create zones of different access and contact, and provision of free space for animals; places for contacts animals-people-environment; place for rest; constructions at preferable prices including natural materials; focus on local domestic and wild animals and plants.

In 2002 each Dobrich citizen had disposed of approximately 470 kg solid household waste. According to a survey over 33% of the waste can be recycled. Three schools in Dobrich implemented small projects for separated collection of waste. The aim was to investigate which was the most appropriate age fro the start of such training and to educate children on saving resources.

Since 1997 the Municipality of Dobrich supplies in kind seedling for planting and greening up different districts of the city. The initiative has aimed at raising citizen awareness in greening up areas between blocks of flats and keeping them clean.

Morava Association is an environmental NGO developing the Step into the Future Project together with Dobrich Municipality. The project started a Green School in the Center for Protection of Nature and Animals, which has rich flora and fauna.

An innovative approach is used through which local authorities delegate responsibilities to a local NGO Center for Economic Development, to undertake concrete measures for improving the living conditions in the three settlements.
