Background

Dobrich is one of the first cirties in Bulgaria to have developed a Green Areas Plan and regulations for its implementation. The city is divided in 4 park areas. Citizen initiatives are an effective form to implement these documents in practice.

Practice

The 10 anniversary of the St George's city park involved citizens in green up initiatives supported by the Municipality of Dobrich. Events included:

- clean up of city areas

- planting bushes, trees and flowers.

This time the initiative had a competitive character. Competitions were held for the cleanest area between blocks, the best looking private garden, schoolyard, commercial site etc. Clear rules were introduced and different awards were provided.

Results
In the course of time DObrich citizens became used to the idea that green areas are their responsibility to a great extent. Young people have an enhanced role in the process, inputting their imagination and commitment to the looks of the place.
