Background

City of Dobrich has a well-developed and maintained green system within the frameworks of the old city boundaries . In the future and according to the Green System Plan of Dobrich City, four park areas will be developed; two of them already have spatial plans . In accordance with the Green Cadastre within the Green System plan of Dobrich City 783 decars of green areas were established within the Municipality . At this stage of the process 420 decars are regularly maintained. 2500 cubic meters of organic waste (grass and leafage, trimmed branches) is annually collected and thrown away .

These kinds and other organic wastes, which are provided by various industries on and around the city territory could be used as source of composting . The cycle could be closed and the compost product could be used for improving the structure and consistence of soils in the green areas .

Practice

Composting is an advanced way of imitation of the natural cycle of life and death . The final product in this process is dark, loose, partially rotten form of organic material, which does not show any indicator of its origin . The only difference between the final compost and the forest humus, created by nature, is related with duration .

The activity of various micro-organisms and invertebrates transforms raw organic material at a heap of compost into a finished compost . The maximum decay happens, when those organisms are exposed to an appropriate balance of oxygen, humidity and nourishing . The products of composting process include the finished compost, carbon dioxide, heat and water .

In the process of red worm composting the appropriate place, usually outside, should be selected . The terrain selected in this case presents a micro-dung-fill in the area of a decorative nursery-garden .

The facility, which is in the process of construction is a compost heap in the form of a lifted bed . In order to achieve optimal humidity it is necessary to establish contact with the soil and to put a drainage layer .

The heap in its full volume should be well aired in order to maintain optimal humidity and temperature during all seasons, thus creating the conditions necessary for the development of worms .

The project implementation includes collection, transportation, initial construction of beds for composting, processing of organic wastes to the phase of finished compost and its usage in green areas.
