The project was funded by the Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives. It aimed to focus the efforts of government and citizens in improving the living conditions in the city by creating a park.
Information campaign
The population was informed about the project objectives. 4 meetings were conducted with young people in the local schools. Students took part in the implementation of the campaign by planting and placing notice boards. The project was presented before other groups such as the unemployed and minorities, with the support of the Labour Bureau. A press conferences was held by the project team.
Creating the Green Heart of Simeonovgrad
The landfill area was cleaned up by the citizens, covered with humus soil and planted with bushes and flowers. An Eco patrol was set up to protect the new park.
Opening of the park
The park was opened on 4 June 2003 with festivities in the city. There were chilgren s games and competitions such as asphalt drawing etc. as well as a concert.
Better livning conditions were created for the citizens of Simeonovgrad and partnership was created between local government and citizen groups. Awareness and environmental culture of young people was raised.
