Background

The project idea emerged form the needs of three villages near Razgrad for a better living environment. The project activites aimed at finding out the best way to solve the problems by consulting citizens and giving responsibility to the local NGO.

Practice

The three villages acted in partnership supported by the municipality of Razgrad. The project started in June 2002. Apart form attaining the congrete objectives the project aimed a t keeping young people in their home villages. Activities were funded by USAID through the FLGR within the Imroving the Living Environment Program.


A working team was set up of all the project partners:

- Ushintsi village decided to build a children s playround and planting new greenery around it.

- Similar activites were planned in Poroishte village as well.

- Balkanski Villare aimed to solve their greatest problem the floods caused by the local river crossing the village.

Results

The project succeeded in completing the restoration activities: 26 benches were constructed, correction of the river was made to prevent flooding; over 700 tree and bushes were planted in the three villages


Local people increased their confidence that a positive change can be implemented by their active participation and partnership between local authorities, NGOs and citizens.
