Social Activities

Social services for disabled children and their families were provided by social workers, a psychotherapist, an art therapist, a logopedist, and а lawyer. Consultations, therapeutic sessions, and specific activities were conducted to integrate the disabled children into their peer communities. The project assistants mediated between clients and local institutions when a problem emerged. In the work process, the specialists interacted with NGOs, and local and central government institutions whose work is connected with the problems of disabled children.

In the project framwork 60 unempolyed women have become familiar with key documents of the labour legislation and the requirements for labour conditions. They are motivated to affirm their rights, to take a firm citizen stand and to seek realization in the NGO sector. Having been acquainted with the work specifics of an NGO, they have taken part in the work of the project implementing organization, and with support from their partners they participated in the census and election campaigns.

For the first time in Bulgaria, the teams of the Open Hearts project organized training in communication with the visually impaired for specialized professional groups. The White Cane language was promoted among the society through the mass media.

On the basis of an Agreement for Cooperation signed between the Municipality of Gabrovo and Municpality of Tunn dated 18 May 1998 and the Protocol for joint work of 2003, the two partners start implementing a project led by Mother Care Association in Gabrovo, focused on providing warm food in the winter to 20 socially disadvataged children from Gabrovo of age between 8 and 12.

For the minority groups, completing this project was of great social importance. The lack of a sewerage system created preconditions for spreading various infections (hepatitis, ventricular-intestine infections, malaria, etc.). The project improved the neighborhood environment and hygiene and prevented landslides in its southwest part.

Media With Human Face Association, with the financial support provided by the Co-operating Netherlands Foundations for CEE and the Council of Ministers, initiated the TV program entitled Regardless devoted to disabled people, on Plovdiv Public Television. The program is an effective forum for exchange of information and contacts, job opportunities, points of view, ideas and suggestions.

The Children s Day Center, the first of its kind, has been established in Pleven by Lik Culture Center (Chitalishte). A long-term self-funding strategy is incorporated in the project, thus creating a favorable environment for Roma children s integration. Other project objectives are to develop children s communication skills and talents and to motivate them to go regularly to school. The local community has greatly appreciated project activities.

The centre for social work with single mother families in Sofia supprots these families in knowing their rights, gaining access to information and support in their professional realization. The centre provides juridical and social consultations, mediation and advocacy for single mothers rights and securing jobs. A library named At Mum s has been set up, where women can exchange clothes, shows, kitchen utensils, books etc.
