Sewerage of a Roma Neighbourhood in the town of Oriahovo
Municipality of Oriahovo
Background
The municipality of Oriahovo is situated in north south Bulgaria, along the riverside of the Danube. The small yards, the intense building processes, the soil characteristics and the impossibility of building septic drip roasts, which deactivate the landslip processes, caused waste waters to flow through the city streets and flood the houses situated at a lower level. Loess soil watered and created preconditions for landslide processes. Hygiene conditions had become unbearable for normal life.

Practice
The Roma neighborhood is located in the southeast part of Oriahovo, over loess soils of 80-180 m depth. A sewerage project covering the whole city, was developed in 1969. A main collector and other secondary branches, reaching the lower parts of the Roma neighborhood, were built up to that moment. 248 citizens live on the Totleben and Raina Knyaginia streets, which have a length of 1096 m. Building the sewerage was financed as part of the Danube River Initiative Program implemented by the Foundation for Local Government Reform and the US Agency for International Development.
The labour Bureau cooperated for the opening of temporary workplaces for people of Roma origin in the construction process. Citizens of the neighborhood enthusiastically volunteered in building the intercepts from the main conduit to their homes. Local authorities, people from the Roma neighborhood, the construction company, and the FLGR team united their efforts and built 623 meters sewerage on the Totleben and Raina Kniaginia streets.

Results
The implementation of the Sewerage of a Roma Neighbourhood Oriahovo project partially resolved the hygiene-epidemiological problems, introduced anti-erosion measures, stopped the processes of draining the loess soil, and improved the overall environmental situation at the Roma neighborhood.
