Background

The organization's experience in giving support to women and young people in disadvantaged position through education and humanitarian aid proved to be insufficient. Surveys showed that unemployed are in need of more information and more attentive listening to their problems. In order to improve their self-esteem and become more active members of society, they need additional knowledge in the areas of labor legislation and work safety requirements.
Practice

Owing to the efforts of the House of Science and Technology and the project partners the grounds for cooperation between governmental institutions and non-governmental organizations were set up when working on the problem of social integration of people in disadvantaged position within the project. The House of Science and Technology, the Municipality of Vratsa, represented by the Municipal Social Service, the municipal firm BKS, Labour Bureau Vratsa, Regional Administration, and Assen Zlatarov Foster Home participated in the project implementation. Representatives of the above organizations and the target group formed a Community Council.

Such a wide coalition of partners allowed maximum access to all representatives of the target group:
- unemployed mothers with children up to 6 years of age;
- permanently unemployed women;
- women of Roma origin;
- girls coming from Girls Foster Homes.

The project team had their partners` full support in all project activities. The team held training seminars for improvement of the legal culture, carried out practical professional training, and gave the participating women not only moral, but also practical help in finding work realization. During the project, women had the opportunity to consult with a psychologist, a social worker and a lawyer. They were informed about their rights according to the Labour Code and its amendments, as well as the work safety requirements. Practical activities were conducted on the premises of several municipality buildings.

The goal of the project was not only to offer the target group professional qualification, but also to improve their self-esteem, create access to information and new social contacts, as well as give them new ideas for solving their problems through taking a more active civil stand and participating in the social life through non-governmental organizations.

For the implementing organization this was a successful attempt to unite the three social sectors for the cause of overcoming a deep social problem unemployment and its effects upon women.
Results

Results have proved that in the process of time the goals of the project had been achieved. The women participating in the project have kept in touch with the team and informed it about the changes in their social positions. Mediation has helped part of them find temporary jobs, another part have work contracts owing to the project partners, a third part participated in the presidential and parliamentary elections or found their place in the non-governmental section as volunteers.

All these facts have made the team to believe that working on this project was worthwhile, and therefore this practice should be developed in order to achieve even better results. Attention to the emotional and psychological state of the unemployed is as important as care for their material state, so this will be a base for new activities in the future.
