Expenditures of the Municipality of Byala for street lighting are large and have caused liabilities of the municipality towards Electricity Distribution Ltd. to grow. The public lighting in the town of Byala has been cut off since 1999. The municipal administration and the Municipal Council resolved to provide finances and implement reconstruction and modernization of the electric street lighting on the territory of the municipality.

Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria with 1.2 million inhabitants, consumes energy for heating purposes at almost twice the rate of the European standard. This results in excessive energy costs and high CO2 emissions. In order to reduce both energy consumption and air pollution, the municipality decided to establish an energy conservation program. With an EcoLinks Challenge Grant, it teamed up with an American consulting company and a Bulgarian NGO to develop an Energy Efficiency Action Plan.

Bulgarian Women Association Silistra and their partners nongovernmental organizations, the Municipality of Silistra, and small business representatives united their efforts to draw up and realize a project, which main goal was reconstruction of two playgrounds for the children, arbors, and differentiated green plants area. Young people from Silistra actively participated in the project realization. Project partners consider this a precondition that youths would engage themselves in the park maintenance and reasonable use.

The project A Green School for Everyone provoked the population s interest, because it was directed towards solving one of the biggest problems in the Municipality the environmental one. The initiative met the need of improving the environmental culture of the adults, so they could be more oriented and more exigent towards the surrounding environment.

The Municipal Energy Agency in Stara Zagora set up in December 1999, started its activity in June 1999. It is chaired by Dr. Evgenij Zhelev, Mayor of Stara Zagora. Following a successful project application, the Agency starts its activity with the financial support of SAVE II Program of the European Commission. Partners within this project are the Municipalities of Lambeth, UK and Florence, Italy. The project work program encompasses a four year period.

Baywatch 99 project started because of the poor state of the beaches in Varna and the nearby resort areas. The project aims at sending across the message that beaches should be kept clean and in the state everybody would wish them to be when going there. The message is targeted at Varna citizens and guests. Certain beach areas are cleaned to demonstrate the difference with the adjacent areas.

In an attempt to establish a tradition of source separation, the Municipality of Vratsa and the Open Society Club in Vratsa implemented a project entitled Plums for waste or the new old ways of using and reducing waste . The project was funded by the Open Society Foundation. Its implementation created opportunities for the successful replication of the experimented practice, for the involvement of new participants and for the implementation of a parallel program for citizen encouragement and environmental education of adults and children.
