Background
The project meets the need for specific actions aimed at improving the environment. It is based on one hand, on the implementation of the environmental education program and on the other hand, it aims to create commitment among the school community towards overcoming the double standards of the schools system (i.e., we teach about a clean and safe environment in dilapidated and dirty classrooms). The project was implemented in four schools within the Municipality of Silistra.
Practice
In a series of three training seminars and workshops, the project aims to develop capacity in teachers, students and parents to develop a school environment policy including physical improvements of school environment. The improvement of school yards is just one element of a comprehensive school policy, but it demonstrates the most visible change. If well-designed, the improved school yards could be a powerful educational tool. They can be used to illustrate lessons in natural history, mathematics, geography, biology, etc. Silistra could be the perfect place for the implementation of a pilot project on process management aimed at improving school yards by involving the whole school community. If it proves to be successful, the project may be replicated in other cities. The project envisions a study of the British experience, as presented by the two British consultants, Ms. Susan Leckie of the University of Shefield and Ms. Liz Russell of Learning Through Landscapes, a British NGO.
Results
Teachers from four schools in the city will improve their skills in presenting and implementing a comprehensive environmental program; Teachers, students and parents will utilize the possibility offered for the development of a comprehensive school policy; As a pilot project, at least two school yards will be designed and improved. Their sustainable maintenance will be ensured by the implementation of a comprehensive school approach; Partnership between
