Background
Each municipal administration activity is an interesting generator of news for the local media, as most things of the things happening directly concern all the citizens of the municipality. Before Internet was introduced extensively in everyday life the news was disseminated in a traditional way at press conferences, by telephone or fax. Currently the world wide web provides a new method for a fast and immediate informing of the media as well as the citizens about every significant thing happening in the municipality.

Practice
On 15 December 2000 in cooperation with specialists from Internet Group Ltd. Stara Zagora, the new web site of the Stara Zagora municipal council and municipal administration was launched. One of its most attractive features is the electronic Press Center, which can be viewed in the Stara Zagora portal http://www.starazagora.net as well. The programming language used is PHP allowing access to a database storing all published items in the Press Center. The Press Center is accessed through an Internet browser, which ensures a smooth operating interface with many possibilities. The publication of the news is accomplished directly from a municipal computer, by the PR person at any appropriate moment. The news itself can be read immeadiately from the media, and is available in a print friendly format if needed. The most significant achievement is that no matter where in the wide world a citizen of Stara Zagora is, he/she can read the news in nearly real time and be able to respond to the problems of his/her city.

Citizens and journalist have become accustomed to have fast quality information on all issues tackled by the municipality using up-to-date technology. The idea was multiplied during the World competition in model ship design in Aurgust 2001, when a temporary press was set up, publishing news from the sports event every day. The example of the municipality was followed by the regional directorate of internal affairs.
