Background

Upon their graduation, many young people have not even basic knowledge of employment relations and have no idea how to behave on the labor market. Thus, they become easy prey to improper employers. Following some meetings with such young people, the Haskovo Youth House team came up with the idea to set up open admission rooms in the schools. The project was called Me and My Right to Work.
Practice

The open admission rooms project was initiated in February, 1999. The admission rooms targeted mainly students from the upper grades at the high schools. The first two Haskovo schools to have such admission rooms were the mathematics high school and the restaurant management high school. Mr. Alexander Tochevski, a law student, facilitated the meetings. The meetings were held during school hours, with sufficient time dedicated to students questions. The purpose of the open admission rooms is to provide the young people seeking employment, including temporary and hourly, information on their employment rights and duties, the Labor Code and related legislation and workplace safety rules. The teenagers are also taught how to protect themselves from disloyal or unscrupulous employers. The initiative generated a lot of interest among the students who showered the facilitator with questions.

The practice will continue throughout the next academic year. The plans are to make the open admission rooms available to most of the students graduating from secondary schools. Admission rooms management has been assigned to Ms. Fanny Hristova, a legal expert.

This initiative is a part of the Open Admission Room project of the national government-sponsored Youth Information and Consulting Services Program. As such, the initiative was funded by the Committee on Youth, Physical Education and Sports.
Results

The open admission rooms under the Me and My Right to Work motto allow the young people to gain knowledge that would make them better informed and motivated in seeking employment. To a great extent, this practice will prevent their use as cheap or free labor.
