Sharing innovations for improving local self-government
Social Activities
The Chovekoljubie Association together with local government, business and media has been working for three years to establish a Center for Mental Health in the Municipality of Pazardjik. The team members, part of them being people with psychiatric problems, have passed successfully the series of qualification courses, organized by the Labor Bureau. With their voluntary work they took part in the construction and repair work of the Center s building a process that contributed to their social integration and rehabilitation.

The Day Center for work with unsupervised young people, the first of its kind in Bulgaria, has designed and pilot tested a successful model for work with this risk social group. The Center s team has worked on several programs and has accumulated experience of the most effective methods for solving or relieving their hard problems. Partnership relations were established with central and local government institutions, with universities and non-governmental organizations.

The Pokrov Bogorodichen Parish Center aims at rehabilitating life and activity in the parish community in the Pokrov Bogorodichen Church through various forms of activities (educational, social, cultural) and exchanging experience with other parish communities all over the country. The work in the Parish Center is a joint initiative of the Pokrov Bogorodichen Foundation and the Pokrov Bogorodichen Church Council.

The program of specialized Educo courses Children in Risk started in 1998, directed to children in disadvantaged positions, children without parents living in different houses and orphanages, and children with chronic diseases in a stage of compensation. The lack of specialized and adapted programs for social and health prevention and rehabilitation of risk group children and young people in Bulgaria is the basic motive for preparing the program. The main purpose is to help children create a sense of their own value and to facilitate the process of their adequate development and social integration.

The project financed by the Cooperating Netherlands Foundations provided the opportunity for the organization to conduct a series of educational seminars (in schools in the town of Pernik) devoted to the topics of present day concern to parents and children in the modern Bulgarian family, as well as meetings with schools management and setting up an youth club at the Center.

The first Bulgarian home for people in the last stage of a terminal disease was established on initiative by the Open Society Club, Veliko Turnovo, with the assistance of the Veliko Turnovo municipal administration. The goal was to provide these people all needed care and psychological assistance to overcome the suffering. The existence of the home also helps the families and the relatives of the sick people.

The project was initiated in February, 2000, and was implemented by the Humanitas Association, Rousse. The project was supported by Save the Children Fund, UK, under the New Social Policy for Children and Family project funded by the British Government s Know How Fund. The project was implemented with the active support of the Municipality of Rousse. To meet the needs of the Gaming Services Center, the Municipality provided premises within the Zora kindergarten.

Typically, the case is of an employer who has utilized young people s skills and hasn t paid them. This practice meets young people s need to get better oriented and more flexible in the labor market.
