Youth Initiatives

The Youth Initiatives Section to the Regional Association of Municipalities Maritza works for the improvement of the communication ability and the active participation of a diversity of young people in community decisionmaking through the provision of skills and knowledge, through funding youth projects and initiating dialogue between local authorities, young people and business.

BAFP applies the innovative method of education of peers to peers, e.g. in that case education of young people to young people a method that has proved its effectiveness, especially in such a delicate area as the sexual education. The method relies on the instinctive empathy between young people for creating and sending an exciting message for adequate informing and taking personal responsibility.

The Open Society Club, Veliko Turnovo, in partnership with local authorities, supported the adoption of the European Charter on Young People s Participation in Municipal and Regional Life by the Veliko Turnovo Municipal Council. In line with the principles incorporated in the Charter, the Club organized the First Balkan Forum of Youth NGOs. The final declaration of the Forum established the cooperation and exchange of information between young people.

For a second year, the Center for Local Development Association in Buhovo organized international youth volunteer camps. The camps were organized jointly with the Partners for Local Development Associations in Devin and Madan and their respective youth organizations, Step by Step towards the 21st century and Phenomenon 2000. Volunteers from all over the world participated in the camps and worked to improve living conditions in the cities of Buhovo, Madan and Devin.

The organization developed YMCA Start, a successful project that was first implemented in 1996. Between 1996 and 2000, the project was repeated twice, every time with new elements and new participants added.

The international youth camps were organized on the initiative of the Centre for Local Development Association (CLD), Bouhovo, with the cooperation of the Youth Development Alliance (YDA). These camps were the next step in the implementation of CLD s project on the improvement of quality of life in the city. The international youth camps project was supported by the S.E.G.A. Foundation, the Bulgarian Red Cross, the Kremikovtsi District Administration, Kremikovtsi Corp. and the Kremikovtsi Tourism Company. All of these entities helped to provide the materials and the tools and to cater for the volunteers during their stay.

In cooperation with the Municipality and NGOs, the Horizon Youth Club implemented a project entitled Unifying creative youth s efforts in the self-government of a small municipality . The project did a survey on young people s willingness to participate in local government and initiated some improvements in the cultural, sports and professional life of the youth. Together, the young people planned to improve the cooperation and identified specific actions aimed at creating favorable conditions for their development and involvement in local government.

Motivated by their desire to improve the quality of life in their city, the members of the Children Rights Protection Society developed the Adopt a Park or Playground project. The project was developed and implemented jointly with volunteers, the Municipality of Velingrad and other NGOs and covered eight city parks in Veligrad. The project was also supported by the Ministry of Environment and Waters and raised young people s awareness of environmental problems.

The problems of young people could be solved more easily if they participate actively in the local government. A Regional Youth Organization is created as a section of the Regional Municipal Association - Maritsa. It is called Youth Initiatives and its tasks and duties are to inform, mediate and involve young people in the discussions for solving municipal problems. Representatives of all 10 municipalities, members of the Association, take part in the activity of the section, as well as students, NGO representatives and municipal clerks.

The experience of the Open Education Center in work with young people is the main premises for the successful realization of the elections for a Students Parliament. Projects developed by the Parliament Committees are presented to the Municipal Council. The cooperative initiatives between the Students Parliament and other youth organizations continue successfully.
