Background

In the area of Botevgrad municipality live not a few roms. They inhabit a part of Saransk neighborhood in the town. Among the Roma population there are people with different social status, but the predominating part are socially disabled. For their faster integration in society is necessary to be provided a place for meetings and service. In the past there was a Roma club, which was a center for cultural life, where often were all the inhabitants of the neighborhood. Later on the building was privatized and the only place in town for appearance of the Roma population disappeared.

The guidance of Botevgrad municipality decided to set up a new Roma club in the neighborhood inhabited by roms.

Practice

The lack of finance opportunities for setting up a Roma club forced the municipal guidance to search non-standard forms of gathering resources. The organization for gathering the resources was in charge of the head of Ethnic Integration Department, Municipal administration Botevgrad.

Letters were prepared to all the ambassadors accredited in Bulgaria. There was given detailed and precise information about why do we need these resources, how they will be laid out and by what means they will be accounted. The social status of the Roma population was described in details so as the necessity of a center where they can gather and carry out different activities and initiatives. Observing the fact that the Roma population in town is quite an active one (they participate in all the initiatives of the municipal guidance by the medium of their two roman counsels), the necessity of this club is huge.

The support for this initiative will help for a faster setting up of the club, whose building will start this year.

Results

The idea of gathering resources was adopted by our fellow-townsmen;

Roms received a support by a large group of people in Botevgrad;

The answers we received from the embassies encouraged us that we work in the right direction;

Setting up the club is forthcoming, but the initiative of gathering resources has not finished yet;

Working to realize the idea showed us that the ethnic integration is extremely important in society nowadays, no matter how it is achieved.
