The idea for the project was a result of the need in Bulgaria for adequate services to children placed in institutions and to provide better opportunities for placement in a suitable family environment. This was necessitated by the fact that in Bulgaria there are too many children in institutions, which is unacceptable for a State member. The aim was to reduce the trauma of abandonment of the baby by providing foster care and a decent family life. The main target group are 0-3-year-old children placed in Zlatitsa orphanage.
The main objective of this project is to avoid placing the baby in the institution by preparing a foster family to provide adequate care. Implemented activities to achieve the objective: training of specialists, conducting a mass information campaign, training of candidates for foster parents, placing children and subsequent monitoring.
Conducted a massive information campaign (51 general information meetings, 116 individual information sessions, 25 informal meetings with volunteers). Trained nine candidates for foster parents (1 family, 6 individual foster parents and an approved foster parent in need of additional training). Enhanced understanding of foster care within the Srednogorie and the reasons for the abandonment of children in early childhood. Established Child Commissions in the municipalities of the region.
For better presentation of results, we made a comparative analysis of our achievements with a similar project implemented in 2007 by the Samaritans Association – Stara Zagora in 2007.
* Association ”Samaritans” is currently the leading organization in providing the social service “Foster care” in the Republic of Bulgaria with impressive results. Our team was on a study tour with them, which contributed to the successful implementation of this project.
