Background

The Youth Association in Mezdra was registered in 2001. Its activity is directed to improving public works in Mezdra as well as solving problems related to young people s quality of life, organizing various initiatives and seminars. In small cities the lack of activity and disengagement of young people with public life can lead to crime, violence, drug use or other kinds of undesired behaviour.

Practice

The idea of forming Interest Clubs was included in the Strategic Action Plan of the Youth Association. A survey among young people showed that some of them wished their home town to be clean, others to have leisure time facilities or to pursue their favourite hobbies.

The Youth Association first looked for appropriate premises and addressed a request to the Mayor and the Municipal Council to obtain the permission to use the former Youth House, which was partially unoccupied. The Municipality did repair works and gave permission to the Association to use it for their activities.

The Youth Association project was funded by C.E.G.A. Foundation, which supports the organizations s overall activity. On the other hand, the Municipality of Mezdra cooperates with them on organizing a range of events and initiatives.

The Literary Club brings together young talents who present their own works at the meetings. Mezdra has a long standing literary tradition in this field and the young writers can find support from their older colleagues from the Hristo Botev Literary Club with a history of 50 years now. A proposal was discussed to publish a collection of young talents works.

The idea of forming a Drama Club brought together a great number of enthusiasts. The Art Club organizes monthly exhibitions in the local gallery. The Sports Club was given in kind 3 tennis tables by the Kiril and Metodii school. Memberships in clubs is free as their maintenance is undertaken by the Youth Association.

Results

Though freshly started, the results of the Interest Clubs activity are already visible. Their present attractive activities for young people, which will help reduce negative influences and enhance personal growth.
