Background

The idea of involving young people in municipal public life was discussed by the municipal administration in 2000. This idea was incorporated in the Strategy for Development of the Municipality of Mezdra and the Program for its realization.

Practice

In the beginning of July 2001 after preliminary information campaign in the media (Intersat cable and Radio Mezdra) a meeting was held between students and the mayor of Mezdra. The possibility of their taking part in renovation works for the benefit of the town was discussed. Students pointed out their preferred spheres of work.

In the period 30 July 12 October 2001 26 students started work, divided in 2 groups. One group of 14 people worked on the repair of asphalt surfaces and completed a total of 667 work days. The average monthly salary was 265.58 lv. The second group of 12 people worked on the clean up of green areas, painitng of rails and kindergarten sites and completed 486 work days with an average monthly payment of 199.40 lv.

In 2002 the interest on the part of the students was significant. 50 students expressed a desire to join the initiative at their first meeting with the mayor. The participants were divided into two groups and worked between 5 August 8 October. Weekly reporting on the completed work and weekly payment continued. One group knocked down old buildings and cleaned construction waste, another repaired pavements, the third one repaired asphalt road surfaces and the fourth one cleaned up gutters and roadside space, and did painitng work on different sites.

Students work has been satisfactory both for the municipal authorities and for the students themselves, who helped their own studies with the finances obtained. The work was high quality and efficient. Municipal administration has a contact database for the participants and hopes to be in touch with them. A student graduating in civil construction came back to work at the Citizen Information Center.

Results

Students born in Mezdra have worked enthusiastically for two summers now for the beautifying of their home town. Significant results have been achieved and appreciation has been demonstrated on the part of the mayor and municipal management of the students contribution to the community. The hope is that students one day will come back to Mezdra to practice their professions as doctors, lawyers or experts in the administration.
