Sharing innovations for improving local self-government
A project for development and greening up of Mir Kindergarten
Chairman of the Women s Association
Background
The idea for this project arose from the need for Mir Kindergarten to become a desirable and needed educational environment for the village children. Since the municipality budget for repair activities was insufficient, other ways of solving the problem had to be looked for. Mir Kindergarten Iskra is the biggest one in the municipality; about 70 children mainly of Turkish origin attend it.
The idea of realizing a non-governmental organization project in the region was a big challenge at the beginning. The Women s Association was a newly registered but hopeful organization. The Danube River Initiative Program encouraged the founders of the Association 45 women of different ethnic and cultural background to define their goals. Thus they applied to the program with a successful project for improving the living environment in the village.

Practice
The target group of the project were the children attending Mir Kindergarten. The project work was organized in several activities:
1. Repair of the facilities in front of the kindergarten building; 2. Indoor repair of the building;
3. Partial replacement of the yard fence and construction of a new concrete one;
4. Planting decorative trees and bushes;
5. Forming children playgrounds in the kindergarten yard through wooden panels and flower hedges.
The Municipality of Sitovo was a project partner and provided the finances for preparing the design project. The project started in June with the Association members volunteer work. Parents and municipal officials also participated. Besides volunteers, the project hired specialists for the specific construction work. The kindergarten personnel took active part in many of the project activities.
The project included renovation of the study rooms. One of them is used for celebrating birthdays, organizing puppet theaters etc. so each of its walls was painted in different colors.
The project team made sandstone, which is a favorite game spot for the little children. A lot of trees and bushes were planted; beautiful wooden panels and flower hedges outlined the children s playgrounds.
