Background

The project Building a Historical Spot Open-air Museum in the Danube Park was the continuation of nearly three years of efforts of the local authorities, non-governmental organizations and citizens to restore the park recreation areas, exhibit the cultural and historical heritage and include it in the recreation zones of the city.
Practice

The main goal of the project was the development of a Historical Spot and incorporating it in the park environment. It comprises the National Archeological and Architectural Reserve "Durostrom - Druster Silistra , proclaimed a recreation area with Council of Ministers Act 627/ 28.12.1971.

The first step in the project realization was the conservation and exhibition of the archeological excavations. This site has already been approved as part of the Beautiful Silistra 3 project.

Additionally, an exhibition of artefacts is about to be built, which will attractively present exhibits from the late ancient and medieval periods, discovered in the Danube Park. A special Entrance Garden will be compositionally connected with the Garden of Artefacts and designed as a focus center near the excavations. Proper explanatory tablets in the two languages will be placed; and additionally, a recreation area will be created. Those are two important sites which will attract citizens and visitors of the city. The Garden of Artefacts will enrich the plant diversity of the Danube Park, which is a national monument of gardening art. An alley devoted to the new history of Silistra will be built.

The project aims to involve citizens in building and maintaining recreation areas, history education sites, and preserving nature in the urban environment according to the Local Agenda 21.
Results

An important result of the development and realization of the Open-air Museum in the Danube Park Silistra would be the preservation and development of the cultural and historical heritage of the oldest park in Bulgaria, dating since 1870.

Combining a historical exhibition of European importance and green environment is an example of the possibility for archeological sites to be successfully integrated into city zones. Publicity could turn them into attractive tourist spots.

Local students and their teachers could also take advantage of the Open-air Museum in their studies. This is how the natural and cultural heritage preservation activities of local authorities supported by citizens will be implemented according to the requirements of Local Agenda 21.
