Youth Initiatives
The unemployment in the city of Silistra, invariably leading to family budget shrinkage, compelled the young people to seek temporary jobs during the summer days. The Youth Club of Silistra, with the support of the Committee for Youth, Physical Education and Sport, has organized a summer youth labor market. The market arranges for interviews and meetings with business representatives from the region and provides temporary jobs in the summer for 60 per cent of the young people out of a total of 342 who have shown interest in the initiative.

In Bulgaria, computers and the opportunities that they offer are often inaccessible for young people. The Tugrovishte Center for Youth Activities and Initiatives has set up a computer club that offers specialized computer training courses for young people and the possibility of free personal access to Internet and electronic mail.

There have always been difficult children, but in today s difficult times, their problems call for a much broader public involvement. The Haskovo Youth Center, jointly with the local district police force, set up a Public Reception Room and a Preventive Counseling Room bringing together a team of specialists, social workers and police officers to offer helpful advice and support to both children in trouble and their families.

A neighborhood mostly zoned as a high-rise residential development a bed-town with a large proportion of young residents, is suffering from a marked absence of opportunities for social contact, resulting in public apathy. Drug and alcohol abuse are increasingly prevalent among the young. To remedy the situation, Mladost District launched a program aimed at encouraging young people s involvement in local public dialog and community work.

The Project, With a Little Help from My Friends, creates an effective model for social work with students from underprivileged families. In stead of the conventional direct humanitarian support, the students are given opportunities to earn their own income. In addition, they acquire real-life experience and skills to allow them to cope in the labor market.
