In 2002 Ministry of Youth and Sport developed a subgrant program for municipalities. Mezdra Municipality submitted a program, developed by Direction Humanitarian Activities. It was designed for implementation within the municipal Work with Youth Program in order to react to negative impact of drugs, alcohol, and criminality on youth. The program is a priority task of the municipal administration and mayor Ivan Asparuhov, who is a former sportsman.
The program is developed by Direction Humanitarian Activities. It carried out a regulation for swimming courses, information in local media and schools, a list of participants, trainers, medical control, and transportation to swimming pools, safety instructions, and competitions. The bigger part of contribution is provided by municipality which carried out the whole organization and safety of children within program implementation. This year Swimming summer 2004 involved 180 children. For the first time along with swimming and water gymnastics courses children's medical treatment of spinal malfunction was conducted. For the first time performance was given by the trainees of synchronic swimming. A swimming competition for children was organized in Zverino and in Mezdra.
The program provided children, interested in swimming, with the opportunity to train for free according to regulation requirements. Positive results of the program are the following:
- rational spending of spare time for children
- alternative for sport activity and protection of health
- children involved in swimming courses conducted by professional safeguards
- visit of archeological excavations and photo exhibition
- parents were satisfied with the organization and felt secure for the safety of children
- organizers (Mezdra Municipality) were pleased with their work done and goals achieved
- cooperation between Mezdra Municipality, sport clubs, schools and medical staff was improved
- wide broadcasting in media and raising of public awareness on children sport activities
- local business informed about importance of children health in order to help and provide financial support for children sport activities.
