The last several years, the City Library of Svishtov has severely suffered the consequences of the difficult economic situation of Bulgaria. Reduced financial abilities influenced not only on the quality of the services offered, but also on the general presence of the institution in the educational and cultural life in the city. Being a city of youths and students, Svishtov Library should base its services on the modern informational technologies. The lack of automated catalogues, as well as the lack of Internet connection with other Bulgarian libraries deprives the citizens of Svishtov of information access, education opportunities and basic cultural and social values. Resolution number 18 of the Public Forum of Svishtov imposed the idea for computerization of the City Library.

The project aims modernization of the services provided by the City Library of Svishtov. Thanks to the financial support of Foundation for Local Government Reform and the Municipality of Svishtov, the library managed to purchase five personal computers, as well as the necessary library software program. The next step of the project would be organizing educational courses for the library personnel. The new technologies would allow building internal informational network and connecting to Internet. After introducing the new informational system, the readers would be able to use the full capacity of the City Library of Svishtov.

- improving the professional qualification of the Library personnel;

- automated use of unique materials and collections;

- connecting to the Bulgarian public libraries network;

- introducing new services and products that helps the citizens of the Municipality in their everyday activities e-mail inquiries, e-mail newspapers, magazines, etc.;

- increase of public interest towards the Library institution and activities;

- creating preconditions for development of new projects and looking for alternative ways of financing them.
