The first edition of Mezdra 21st Century was printed out on May 1st 2002. The newspaper is a natural continuation of Iskarski far , a newspaper that had been published between years1929 and 1939, Iskarska komuna , and Iskarski stranici . However, in the beginning of the 90s, people from the Iskar River region had no printed edition of their own. Today, the municipality management does everything in their power to restore the newspaper of Mezdra.
The newspaper Mezdra 21st century is published two times a week in 500 copies with volume of eight pages. 200 people are signed to receive it in their homes, a 100 copies are sold around the town of Mezdra, 110 copies are directed to the 27 different municipal villages, 18 copies are saved freely for the village libraries, and about 50 copies are given to municipal officials. The editor of the newspaper does all preliminary activities of the print out. Members of the literature club of the Mezdra community center Prosveta and other citizens give great support in gathering journalistic materials. All contributors are volunteers. During different holidays and anniversaries, the newspaper doubles its pages with no change of its price. Since the beginning of 2003, the Youth Organization of Mezdra started publishing the supplement Teenager financed entirely by donators. Each edition offers the readers the opportunity to publish a free announcement of up to ten words.
At the end of 2002, the newspaper organized a lottery with one big prize and two free subscriptions. Mezdra Radio broadcasts the content of each edition. Readers responses, letters, and recommendations are the best proof that the newspaper finds its place in the everyday life of the citizens of Mezdra. The ambition of the authors is to keep the newspaper honest, accurate, and unprejudiced. The Municipality of Mezdra intend to start publishing an electronic version of Mezdra 21st Century on its Internet site www.mezdra.dir.bg .
Mezdra 21st Century newspaper informs the citizens of the municipality about current and past events of local importance, objectively covers the work of the local self-government structures decisions of the Municipal Council, executive reports of the Program for Mezdra Development 2000 2006, etc., announces business opportunities, popularizes local literature authors, organizes discussions about local sport and cultural events.
