Background

The Municipality of Aksakovo consists of 23 settlements. Agriculture takes a leading part in its economy; therefore there is no serious environmental pollution in the area. There are eight educational institutions in the municipality: one primary school, six middle schools, and one high school.

The difficult economic situation and the low municipality incomes are among the reasons for the municipality to be uncapable of realizing projects related to the construction and sanitary improvement of schools and kindergartens, health centers, forestation, etc. Some towns and villages in the municipality are unable to provide adequate learning environment to the requirements of modern education and connectivity with the world.
Practice

The main goal of the project corresponded to several important sub-goals:

1. Overcoming primitivism in children s education, which has been imposed by the learning environment old dated equipment and lack of elementary hygiene and living standards in the schools.

2. Creation of a learning environment with cultural parameters, which would help the development of adults of mixed ethnic background and support their integration into the society.

3. Contemporary learning environment would attract educated teachers to the village, who would live there and work both with children and parents of various ethnic background.

The project included activities in two main stages:

Stage 1: Completing the construction work
- in the building;
- around the building.

Stage 2: Equipping and furnishing the school
- classrooms;
- library;
- teachers room;
- principal s office;
- gymnasium;
- other equipment: slide projector, overhead projector, tape recorders, screen, easel, etc.

Owing to the support of the Embassy of Japan and the Municipality of Aksakovo, the new school opened its doors for the children of the municipality in September, 2001.
Results

Providing adequate learning conditions for quality education in the school in the Village of L. Karavelovo has given a chance to students and teachers to feel themselves as part of contemporary society and culture, and has also motivated the children of mixed ethnic background to learn more and be active members of the community.
