Background

This project was the logical continuation of our efforts for a change in the area of civil and ecological education. Sharing of common values and the joint work of people all over the world to guarantee the rights of future generations and the sustainability of the planet made us think how to promote these rights in Bulgaria. Youth participation and willingness for a change have always motivated us and we believe that young people have to be inspired to act. Our main goal was to foster youth participation through introducing them to the new generation of civil rights and thus create a higher level of civil culture. The lack of systematic and interactive civil education, the lack of knowledge about the third generation human rights, the lack of active participation of youth in implementing their own ideas and projects inspired us to start this project.

Future friendly – third generation human rights, new generation of citizens” was quite successful in addressing the need for a platform, a space for developing and implementing young people’s ideas in the context of the future of our world and collective human rights.

Through our Ideas Workshop we helped many young people to start thinking about their community and how it can be moved forward in a more sustainable, friendly and beautiful world.

Practice

Our main goal was to foster the development of the Bulgarian civil society through creating an action-friendly environment and a youth program in the area of third generation human rights and civil participation, including the specific new knowledge, skills and techniques required to work in the area of collective human rights. We reached our goal with a lot of work and the active participation of youths from all over the country. We would not have been successful without their willingness for a social change. But what was most surprising for us during the implementation of the project was their initiative in the implementation of their own ideas in the context of collective human rights.

Preliminary research on the specific knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to work on the validation of collective human rights helped us a lot to find the right way to reach the youth.

We managed to activate the young people by including them in the program for face to face and distance education in the area of third generation human rights and civil participation.

On our web site www.futurefriendly.bg they had access to high quality information materials (texts, audio tapes, videos) presenting the project and the work on the program.

Including young people in a social network for exchange of ideas, creating possibilities for joint work and sharing of experience and good practices in the sphere of collective human rights gave very good results – by the end of the project there were 25 youth initiatives developed. Work on them and the social network will continue in the future as well, since the network is becoming increasingly popular among young people.

That is how we accomplished the increase of knowledge and skills of capable and motivated young people with a global view on the problems and solutions connected to third generation human rights in the community, the region, the country and the world.

The culmination of this process was the Ideas Workshop, where young people joined their creative power to work on the ideas and projects in the context of new generation human rights.

Results

Change can be seen mainly in the lives of the young people that participated in the project, as well as all the others who joined and helped in the implementation of their projects and all the beneficiaries – elderly people, retirees, other young people and children, all of whom learned a lot about third generation human rights. Through the web site www.futurefriendly.bg, young people keep on learning every day how to be more responsible towards their community and the people around them. They learned how to put words into practice and how to attract proselytes and resources to make their ideas a reality. The importance of the project for local communities will continue to grow in the following years. All youth initiatives addressed the needs of the community in the context of the project for new generation of citizens (like online TV for deaf-mute people; campaigns for AIDS prevention; donation of blood; web sites for children with disabilities and special educational needs; donation of smiles to elderly people, etc).
