Background

In the end of August 2004 first steps in preparation of the two-stage project were initiated. The project appeared to be a follow-up of the constant efforts of the municipal leadership to lay the new foundations of municipal waste management .

An important impetus for the achievement of this goal was the establishment of the first cell of the new regional dung-hill for non - dangerous wastes in the land of Oryahovo Municipality, which is envisaged to be soon exploited .

This also caused the efforts to elaborate an up - to - date registry of old wastes on the territory of the municipality and to draw a plan for their re-cultivation . But the lack of funds made the municipal leadership search for funding sources to implement the most urgent works , important for the improvement of polluted areas and their surroundings .

The project on cleaning, greening of cleaned areas and introducing separate waste collection was developed by Miziya Municipality , funded by the Enterprise on Environmental Activities Management within the Ministry of Environment and Waters , Sofia .

Practice

A natural follow-up of the municipal performance on waste management was the elaborated and implemented in 2004 two-stage project on improvement of polluted areas in areas within the Roma neighborhood city of Miziya, greening of areas and introducing separate waste collection . 22 persons living close to the polluted areas did actively participate in this initiative . They took part in the implementation of the most urgent project activities waste collecting and loading , digging of ditches for saplings , and watering of the newly - planted saplings .

The first project stage / including collection , loading and transportation of wastes / was implemented in the end of 2003. 400 cubic meters of wastes were carried away to the city dung-hill and surfacing of the cleaned up areas was performed .

During the second project stage / spring 2004/ 180 deciduous saplings were planted on the improved terrains , and as a result a mixed forest eco - system (10 decars) of main wood species like chestnut , oak , birch and acacia was established .

Besides the cleaning activities the project also included other activities as follows : partial forestation of the re - cultivated terrains and introducing measures against pollution of the cleaned terrains, maintenance of green areas through implementing effective control and sanctions according to the local and national environmental legal acts , carrying out mass information campaign through local media and installing signboards , introduction of guards .

Results

The project implementation helped improvement of cleanness and infrastructure in the areas of the Roma neighborhood city of Miziya and to build motivation in the inhabitants to preserve the environment . The carrying out of project activities provided an opportunity to eliminate the negative impact on the environment, especially in its basic components like : air, water, bio-diversity / through enriching the local flora /.
