Background

The problem of illegal dumpsites has been central for EIC IDEA’s team and its supporters for a long time. The waste thrown around in residential areas, school territories, recreation areas, along the banks of Tundzha river not only offend our eyes, but also cause illnesses. Therefore we decided to design a project to demonstrate that environmental protection is not solely the duty of the local authority, to prove that our commitment does not end when we pay the waste tax, but that it is also about not tolerating those who litter our cities. One way to do this is by explaining the benefit of separate waste collection, pointing out the closest waste containers, introducing separate waste collection of paper, PVC, glass and metal at home, explain what its benefits are to our family and friends, inform ourselves of different ways to save energy and resources in order to lessen our ecological imprint. We have repeatedly discussed with our youth environment protection issues and relevant activities to start with and change people’s self-awareness. As we think that the best mediators of good ideas are young people, we took the decision to target project activities towards young people at educational age, young people between 18 – 35 and representatives of NGOs in Yambol.

Practice

We conducted a survey among 500 people in order to analyze youth attitude towards city environment protection. We established 8 mobile youth teams to take photos of illegal dumpsites and provide information to the municipality of Yambol. Landscaping action was conducted. A poster contest Green Yambol was arranged. An information campaign as well as a traveling exhibition were conducted among 15 schools in the town of Yambol.  Project activities included research and promotion of best European and Bulgarian practices in urban environment protection. A closing youth eco happening was also held.
