Building of supportive and anti-erosion facility in the village of Obretenik

Background
For years in the southeast part of the village of Obretenik, the Municipality of Borovo, a gulch has been deeply engraved. Highly susceptible loess soils and spontaneous rain and snow leaks have caused an intensive erosion processes.
At a general meeting the village committee informed the population of the risk of underestimating the problem and decided to look for ways to build a supportive anti-erosion facility.

Practice
In December 1999, the Municipal Council decided to apply to the Danube Initiative program with a project in the field of social and economic infrastructure of the municipality. Representatives of the Municipality of Borovo, the village of Obretenik and a local private company prepared a project Building of supportive anti-erosion facility in the village of Obretenik.
35 people, mainly of ethnic minority origin, received direct benefit from the project. In the last years, the erosion processes have become extremely intensive and have caused real danger of separating the Roma neighborhood from the village.
The Project main goals were:
- stability of the gulch declivity; the opposite would lead to liquidating of the infrastructure electricity, water sewerage, roads;
- elimination of the danger for the residential buildings to break down not only in the Roma neighborhood, but also in other parts of the village;
- sustainable integration of the Roma population into society.
Informing the population was of great importance, because it was expected of citizens to take active part in the project realization. After finding financial support for the project, a detailed technical plan of the facility was made. Due to the timely adequate interaction of citizens and local authorities, for the period March September 2000 the important environmental problem of the village of Obretenik was finally solved.

Realizing this project was the first stage of the erosion fight program in the village of Obretenik. Building the facility stopped the erosion development, solved an important environmental problem, opened 15 temporary jobs, and improved the security of people living in this part of the village.
