Background
In May 2001 a delegation from the Greek city Ithamos, led by the mayor of the city Vasilios Cantilas, paid an official visit to the Municipality of Dryanovo. At the meeting with the municipality s governing body opportunities for future twinning and cooperation between the two municipalities were discussed.

Practice
The two municipalities are very close in historical and cultural aspect. The Municipality of Ithamos comprises 250 square kilometers and its residents are about 12 000. It has existed as an independent administrative unit for two years. The basic means of livelihood of people there are agriculture, stockbreeding and tourism. Mayor Cantilas shared his satisfaction with the readiness with which the Municipality of Dryanovo supported the proposal for cooperation. He shared with his partners that he had been a municipal councilor in the city of Kardica and in that quality had visited Gabrovo region.
Cantilas idea, warmly supported by the mayor Miroslav Semov, is that a tri-lateral cooperation contract be concluded between a Bulgarian, a Greek and an Italian municipality. This cross-border cooperation would help the partner municipalities successfully realize projects under European Union programs, which will contribute to the development of the municipalities and the region. An invitation has been made that Dryanovo become a member municipality of Amphictionia Association, whose members are municipalities from Greece, Italy, France, Cyprus, Malta, Spain, Turkey and Poland.
Dryanovo municipal administration organized a rich program for the Greek guests, comprising meetings with the mayor s team, municipal councilors, businessmen, and introduction to the cultural and historical landmarks of the region.
A delegation from the Municipality of Dryanovo paid its first official visit to the Municipality of Ithamos in October 2001. The visit was made during the days of the National Holiday of the Hellenic Republic. The program of the delegation, led by Mayor Miroslav Semov, included signing of a cooperation and twinning agreement. The Dryanovo Municipal Council took a decision to support the mayor s initiative. The Chairman of Dryanovo Municipal Council Emil Kisselkov was also member of the delegation. The state that had given the world not only a rich cultural and historical heritage but also the model of democracy pleasantly surprised the Bulgarian delegation the signing of the agreement was done in the presence of all residents of the Municipality of Ithamos.

Deputy mayor Miroslava Lilova and the chief expert of Investment Policy have participated in the work of international conference on the topic of Basic human rights and European citizenship , organized by Amphictionia Association in June 2001 in Athens. Lecturers were representatives of the Delegation of the European Commission. Questions, concerning the basic rights and the European citizenship, the economic and social policy of the EU, the contribution of the Euro to nations getting closer to each other, and SME development were discussed. The Municipality of Dryanovo received an official invitation for membership in the Association.
